You Don't Need To Become An Acoustic Engineer.

You don't need to be the smartest person in the room to make a great decision, you just need enough understanding to stop guessing. Here's how I learned that, and why I built Acoustics Decoded.

Meet Kevin Rule

Founder of Acoustics Decoded and owner of Peace & Quiet Group, a field operator turned strategist who has spent over three decades in building and construction, solving real noise problems in real buildings. Here's the story, in his words.

Most people assume three things

Most people hear the words "acoustics" and/or "soundproofing" and immediately assume three things:

And to be fair, there are times that this is very true. There are parts of this field that genuinely belong to acoustic engineers: technical modelling, sophisticated measuring, specialist design. I would never promote otherwise. But a great many everyday noise problems are not impossible to understand. They only feel impossible because no one has ever shown you how to pull the problem apart.

And pulling things apart has been with me my whole life.

I'm not an acoustic engineer and don't have a building science degree. And that has turned out to be one of the most useful things for me.

I've been taking things apart since I was a boy

When I was a boy, if something broke, I wanted to open it up and pull it apart, like old radios, televisions or toasters. Anything that had stopped working and was no longer precious, because once it was already broken, I couldn't make it worse, and that gave me complete freedom to be curious.

I just wanted to know what was going on inside, what made it work and potentially what had made it fail. I wanted to investigate whether it could be fixed easily, without needing to wait for or engage expensive repairmen. That instinct never left me.

I learned to build by watching

It followed me into renovations and flipping houses (completing over 15 projects). I wasn't a qualified builder and I didn't come from a trade, but I was fascinated by how houses got put together. So I bought units and homes, brought in trades, and watched with analytical eyes.

If I needed tiling done, I'd hire a tiler, and then I'd watch. The preparation, the setting out, the sequence, even the mistakes to avoid. And after a while I thought: that's not magic.

That's not magic. That's simply a process.

That's how I learned to tile. Then gyprocking, joinery, painting and most of the rest of it. Even with plumbing, where you need licensed people to certify the work, I learned enough to understand the job, do what I safely and legally could, and bring in the qualified people exactly where they were required.

Eventually I owner-built a three-storey home, doing much of the work myself. My accountant told me I was out of my mind, my wife told me to just use a builder (but the quotes I received were at least double what it cost in the end, and I could change things at will, no additional charges for minor variations). So these comments had the opposite effect, and in the end I finished it, and sold it for a record price for the suburb at the time.

That taught me something that has shaped everything since.

Then I walked into acoustics

Years later I bought a Noise Reduction business and, shortly after, went to an acoustics conference up in Brisbane. To be honest, I was totally out of my depth. The room was full of brilliant people talking in formulas, modelling and logarithmic scales, well beyond my understanding. I respected every bit of it.

But sitting there, I kept thinking, how is all this relevant to my customers? Because most people with a noise problem don't want to understand acoustic theory. They want to know why the room is so loud, why they can hear the neighbour through the wall, why their voice echoes, why their podcast recording sounds so terrible, and how to avoid wasting money on the wrong solution.

Sound behaves like water. It finds every crack to flow through, and most people end up sealing the wrong one.

The pattern became clear

Most people don't need to become acoustic engineers. They just need to understand the kind of problem they actually have. Is the sound bouncing around inside the room, or is it getting in from somewhere else? Is it coming through the air or running along a structure? How do I even measure the extent of the problem?

The moment you know that, the whole conversation changes. You stop guessing. You stop buying random products. You start asking better questions, and better questions lead to better decisions.

That's why I built Acoustics Decoded

Not to replace acoustic engineers and the great work they do, and not to pretend every problem is simple. But to give everyday people a clearer pathway, so you can diagnose before you decide, and move forward with confidence instead of confusion.

Those three beliefs, too technical, too expensive, needs an expert, are what keep most people stuck. Not laziness. And for the everyday problem, not one of them has to be true. They never were.
